Human signs

By AdventistNews@gc.adventist.org (Glenn Townend)

X Æ A-Xii is the name Elon Musk, the maverick billionaire who recently financed the first private trip into space, tried to call his son. Isaiah, the prophet, was told by God to name his child Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, meaning quick to plunder, swift to spoil (Isaiah 8:1–4). He was told before his wife was pregnant to register the name with the priest and write a sign about it.
Later, Isaiah was asked by God to take his clothes off (Isaiah 20:1-4) and live naked for three years (I am pleased God…

By AdventistNews@gc.adventist.org (Heron Santana)

Seventh-day Adventists in the north of the Brazilian state of Bahia cheered June 27 when two churches reopened and four people were baptized in the pre-dawn hours of that Sabbath day.
But for others still at home, especially children in homes without internet access, it was still a lonely Sabbath, like the dozen or so before it thanks to the novel coronavirus and resulting quarantines.
In the village of Itatiaia, in Capim Grosso, Bahia, Edileusa de Jesus Nunes arrived at a gate of a house in a…

Jonah and Bar-Jonah

By AdventistNews@gc.adventist.org (Gary Krause)

One day, Mr. Jonah, a small-town man from Gath-hepher, ran off to the seaport of Joppa on a mission to avoid an assignment in big city Nineveh. I imagine he scanned the sailing times for ships, searching for the best option. Perhaps there were tantalizing discounts for prophets, even minor prophets. Finally, a ship bound for Tarshish caught his eye. He thought he’d purchased a standard Mediterranean cruise, but soon discovered that it included free underwater adventure activities.
Mr. Jonah and…

Praying in Jesus’ name

By AdventistNews@gc.adventist.org (Andrew McChesney, Adventist Mission)

The Ndong family loves to pray in Libreville, capital of Gabon.
Father and Mother love talking to God so much that they named their three children after the French word for “prayer,” or “priere.” The oldest boy is Priel; the second child, a girl, is Priella; and the youngest girl is Pricilia.
Little Pricilia has prayed before bedtime every night since she was 3. Sometimes she kneels in front of the bed. But usually she jumps up onto the bed and kneels on the nice, soft mattress. She folds her…

Watered-down sermons

By AdventistNews@gc.adventist.org (Daniel Matteo)

About seven-and-a-half years ago, I started work as a minister in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I was determined to grow the church that had been placed under my care.
After 12 months of working very hard in a small congregation, I was dismayed to see that our membership had dropped! One night I was complaining and pouring my heart out to God saying, “Lord! What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I grow my church?”
I was amazed as an answer from God came and impressed on me so very clearly,…
